Yale Cardiothoracic Surgery is a group of world-class heart, chest and lung surgeons devoted exclusively to the cardiothoracic care of adults and children. Our surgeons perform state-of-the-art minimally invasive and traditional operations for the full range of cardiac and thoracic diseases and conditions, including:
Yale's survival statistics for coronary artery bypass, mitral valve replacement, and aortic valve replacement consistently exceed national and regional norm.
Yale Cardiothoracic Surgeons operate at the Yale-New Haven Hospital and the Veterans Administration Medical Center , where they work closely with internists, cardiologists, and vascular surgeons in pre- and post-operative care. Faculty continue cutting-edge research in aortic surgery, transplantation, mechanical heart, xenotransplantation, and experimental cardiac transplantation programs, as well as vascular biology and transplantation immunology, including pathogenesis of coronary arteriosclerosis and xenograft rejection responses.

Toshiharu Shin’oka, MD, has been appointed director of pediatric cardiovascular surgery for the Yale-New Haven Children’s Hospital and associate professor of pediatrics at the Yale University of Medicine. He is an expert in the field of cardiovascular tissue engineering, which he expects to pursue in Phase 1 clinical trial at Yale beginning sometime this year. Dr. Shin’oka expects clinical research in cardiovascular tissue engineering to help advance the field in even more exciting directions. Dr. Shin’oka conducted similar trials with 47 children in Tokyo engineering tissue using stem cells from bone marrow.
