DIVISION OF EMS...
The four full-time physician members of the Division of EMS are pre-hospital specialists who are, first and foremost, board-certified emergency physicians, and members of the full time faculty of the Yale School of Medicine. Division members are clinically active in both the field setting and the Yale-New Haven Hospital Emergency Department. Two PA’s round out the division faculty, serving as EMS and hazardous materials coordinators for the hospital.
The academic emphasis of the division is on EMS systems research (currently focusing on mass casualty triage and emergency medical dispatch) and operational EMS research. Yale’s Fire Rescue Technology Program is conducting several studies in the area of firefighter safety and physiology, with substantial funding from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. Division members routinely present research at the National Association of EMS Physicians and the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine annual meetings, with publications in Prehospital Emergency Care and other peer-reviewed journals.
All division members receive advanced training and experience in the supervision and direction of EMT's and paramedics, medical coverage for mass gatherings, disaster medicine, media relations, and management of multiple casualty incidents. Most EMS faculty are also active-duty firefighters, and several have additional training in urban search and rescue. In addition, as part of the Sponsor Hospital Area Response Physician (SHARP) Team, division members staff a physician response vehicle and provide advanced on-scene medical coverage for area police, fire, and EMS services. Uniforms identify SHARP team members as part of the EMS system, and hand-held radios keep members in constant contact with the New Haven CMED dispatch center, ensuring seamless integration with area fire departments, American Medical Response ambulances, and field supervisory units. The academic focus and specialized training in field operations means that division faculty can provide a level of on-site physician coverage well beyond that offered by most departments of emergency medicine.
Faculty from the Division of EMS are available to provide event and mass gathering medical coverage, along with consultation regarding medical needs at mass gatherings such as athletic events, concerts, and festivals. In addition to on-site medical coverage during mass gatherings, EMS faculty can assist with pre-planning, and will work closely with all EMS, fire, and public safety agencies involved in the event to develop a comprehensive yet workable medical action plan.
The Division of EMS is credentialed by the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine to host the SAEM/Medtronic Physio-Control Fellow in EMS. Click here to find out more about Yale's pre-hospital fellowship training program. You may also view our most recent SAEM re-credentialling application.
