8.  What are the general doses and when should you use ketamine?

Answer:
Drug dose for a healthy adult is 0.5-1.5 mg/kg.

Ketamine belongs to the group of agents known as non-opioid intravenous anesthetics.  It is the one drug that should not be used in patients with intracranial pathology because it increases cerebral blood flow, intracranial pressure, and cerebrospinal fluid pressure. Also, ketamine increases intraocular pressure, and should not be used to induce anesthesia for opthalmologic surgery.  Ketamine generates few respiratory effects, ranging from mild respiratory depression to mild stimulation. Ketamine is not recommended for patients with coronary artery disease because intraventricular pressures are elevated and contractility is increased. It is the only IV induction drug that stimulates the cardiovascular system. It should not be used in patients with Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome.
