16.  Do implants cause immune disease?

Answer:
The cause-effect relationship between implants and autoimmune disorders has been controversial for decades.  Until recently, evidence has been limited to anecdotal case reports and theoretical mechanisms of autoantibody development to silicone.  The relative rarity of these diseases has also made epidemiological study difficult.  However, in the last five years, mounting evidence from epidemiological studies has indicated that silicone implants do not cause immune disease.  Five recent studies have demonstrated no significant increase in the relative risk of patients who have had breast implants.
