Hand burns are aggressively excised and grafted when of indeterminate or deeper thickness. This preserves maximum function and causes the shortest disability from these wounds. Burns of the palm rarely need grafting, as the protective fist-clenching reaction to injury prevents deep palmar burns in most cases. Dressings are applied over the grafts, incorporating a previously fabricated Orthoplast hand splint. This maintains the hand in a protected position of MP joint flexion, IP joint extension, thumb abduction, and wrist extension during the healing period.
