According to this study by Jonsson & Dalgaard from Sweden in selected cases of deep dermal and subdermal burns early excision and skin grafting will result in faster healing and less scarring than expectant management. Most patients in this series were treated within 4 days and as Engrav points out in the discussion that follows this paper, 2 of the patients depicted show beard growth suggesting that they may have healed well from dermal appendages without grafting.
