15. How do repaired lips do long term? PRS 96:549, 1995.

Answer:
The referenced article contains the long term results of Hugh Thomson's unilateral complete cleft lip repair using the Tennison-Randall repair over a twenty-year period.  Preoperative slides were used to grade the clefts as Simonart's, mild, moderate, and severe based on the severity of the nasal deformity, width of soft tissue defect, and acuteness of columella-frenulum angle. A panel consisting of four third-year medical students, one third-year dental student, three certified plastic surgery fellows, and two senior plastic surgeons (including the surgeon who operated) evaluated the results using Farkas-Lindsay anthropometric technique, the modified Williams technique, and aesthetic facial balance. The results were as expected: the mild clefts did the best, followed by Simonart's, then moderate, then severe.  Interestingly, the highest marks were given by the senior surgeons, and the lowest by the fellows.
