12. What is a cryptotic ear?  How can this be corrected?

Answer:
The cryptotic ear is one in which the upper pole of the ear cartilage is buried beneath the scalp.  The superior auriculocephalic sulcus is absent but can be demonstrated by gentle finger pressure.

This can be corrected with:
    1) external conforming splints in the neonatal period
    2) surgical repair - addition of skin to the deficient retroauricular sulcus by means of either skin grafts, Z-plasties, V-Y advancement, or rotational flaps.
