15.  Why do faces sag?  (PRS 1989; 83:11-16  PRS 1992; 89:441)

Answer:
A) Weakening or attenuation of retaining ligaments of the cheek: zygomatic ligament, mandibular ligament, platysma-auricular ligament, and the anterior cutaneous ligament. These ligaments run from deep, fixed facial structures (i.e. bone) to the overlying dermis.

B) The signifigance of the retaining ligaments lies in the fact that as people age, the support from this ligamentous system becomes attenuated, leading to many of the stigmata of the aging face, such as the developement of jowling and prominent nasolabial folds.
