22.  What are waltzing flaps?

Answer:
The term refers to a technique used to transfer tissue to a remote recipient defect site through staged procedures. A tubed pedicle flap is created and attached to an area between the donor and final recipient sites.  After a couple of weeks, the pedicle would be divided and rotated so that it can be reattached to a site closer still to the final recipient site.  This would be repeated until the tissue arrived at the defect site.  Other names that have been used include "walking flaps" and "jumping flaps."  The advent of free flap techniques has essentially made them obsolete.
