2.  Does irradiation work for keloids?

Answer:
The use of ionizing radiation was first attempted in the early 1900’s and thereafter with questionable success.   Radiation indiscriminately destroys collagen-producing fibroblasts in the lesions as well as the surrounding connective tissue, as well as other cells in the region.  Although there are no reports of carcinoma after radiation-treated keloid, caution must be exercised in this regard.
