2.  What radiologic work-up is needed before you operate on a patient with lymphedema?

Answer:
Venous studies are helpful if a component of venous insufficiency is suspected. A variety of imaging techniques may be used in the differential diagnosis and in the assessment of the results of therapy. Lymphoscintigraphy using radiocolloids has been successful in delineating the anatomy of lymph vessels and in evaluating the dynamics of lymph flow. This technique is often useful in planning physiologic forms of surgery. Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging are useful to rule out malignancy. Lymphangiography has been largely replaced by these modern techniques.
