11.  How do you treat an alveolar fracture?  Can you replant teeth?

Answer:
Isolated alveolar fractures are considered unusual, making up only 3.1% of all mandible fractures.  The goal should be to salvage the teeth as well as the bone.  After careful repositioning of the alveolar fragment and stabilization with an arch, any avulsed teeth which are intact should be replanted as quickly as possible.  However, if the tooth root or crown has been completely avulsed or transected then salvage of that tooth is unlikely and should not be attempted.  Also, if the alveolar fracture is part of a larger mandibular fracture line, then an avulsed tooth should not be replanted as tooth devitalization and subsequent secondary infection requiring removal of the tooth are much more likely.
