Acute Esophageal Perforation

At Yale Thoracic Surgery, our nationally and internationally renowned surgeons offer expertise in dealing with emergency conditions, such as esophageal perforations. Esophageal perforations are potentially life-threatening conditions that require immediate attention. The causes of the esophageal perforation include having had a prior invasive esophageal procedure or instrumentation, having esophageal cancer, or experiencing retching and vomiting. Patients with this problem can present with symptoms including difficulty or painful swallowing or signs of a significant infections such as fevers, chills, or low blood pressure among other findings. Following the diagnosis of an acute esophageal perforation by our thoracic surgeons, surgery is usually required.

It is very important that our surgeons are involved in order to determine the best diagnostic and treatment options for patients with acute esophageal perforations. As faculty of the Yale School of Medicine Department of Surgery, they are continually redefining standards of care through their comprehensive skill, innovative procedures, ongoing research, and the application of evidence-based medicine.

The thoracic surgery practice encompasses all aspects of your total esophageal health, including diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up care. Our surgeons are highly skilled at performing even the most advanced surgical techniques for both common and complex conditions. At Yale Thoracic Surgery, we know that the surgical process can feel intimidating. Our surgeons will walk you through the process, step by step, so that you understand the procedure and feel comfortable with your treatment options.
