Urology
Yale Urology is a group of doctors with superior skill in treating the most complicated urologic problems. We emphasize minimally invasive and laparoscopic surgical treatment whenever possible. Our surgeons specialize in surgical treatment of cancers, stone disease, children's disorders, male infertility and incontinence, and women's special urologic needs.
- Cancers: kidney cancer, testicular cancer, prostate cancer, bladder cancer, penile cancer
- Reconstructive urology: continent urinary diversion; intestinal neo-bladders; microscopic vasectomy reversals
- Pediatric urology: hypospadias, undescended testes, hydronephrosis, exstrophy, and tumors; renal anomalies; neurogenic bladders (spina bifida)
- Neurourology: impotence, infertility, erectile dysfunction, incontinence, voiding dysfunction; benign prostatic hyperplasia; evaluation and management of patients with vesicourethral dysfunction
- Stone Disease: treatment and prevention, including ESWL (extracorporeal shock wave)
- Female urology: bladder control, urinary incontinence, interstitial cystitis, and vaginal anomalies.
Yale Urology seeks to understand normal urinary tract function and the changes which occur with aging and pathologic processes, i.e., diabetes, cancer, and inflammatory processes involving the urinary tract. We work to develop new and innovative therapeutic protocols for the management of these disorders, in collaboration with Yale Pediatrics, Nephrology, Pathology, Anesthesiology, Radiology and Pharmacology. For example, prostate cancer may be treated with a nerve-sparing radical prostatectomy or with template radioactive seed implantation. Retroperitoneal lymph node dissections using a nerve-sparing technique may preserve ejaculation after testicular cancer. Using percutaneous epididymal sperm aspiration and testis biopsy, intracytoplastic sperm injection has been successful in achieving fertilization in couples with severe male factor infertility. Urinary incontinence may be evaluated using fluoroscopic cystometry, urethral profilometry, uroflowmetry, and electromyography, and treated with biofeedback. We also perform hand-assisted laparoscopic radical nephrectomies; laparoscopic orchidopexy; and, laparoscopic cryoablation of renal tumors.
