Thoracic Aortic Aneurysm Open Repair

The type of repair performed will depend on the location of the aneurysm, the type of aneurysm, and the patient's tolerance for the procedure.

During open surgery, an incision is made over the area of the affected artery in order to reach the aneurysm directly. There are generally two approaches. In one approach, the surgeons place veins from another part of the body in order to create a detour around the aneurysm. This approach is called a vein graft. In another approach, called a prosthetic graft, surgeons place a prosthetic tube in the area of the aneurysm.

The goal of both surgeries is to keep the aneurysm from rupturing.
